Each letter gets a Unicode combining mark: U+0336 for strikethrough, U+0332 for underline, U+0333 for double underline, U+0338 for a slash and U+0305 for an overline. Because the mark is part of the text, it shows up on X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and in text messages. Turn on “Skip spaces” for a cleaner look between words.

How do I strikethrough text on X or Instagram?

Why does the line look broken in some apps?
Combining marks are drawn by each font. Some fonts leave small gaps between letters, which is normal.
Is this the same as HTML <s>?
No. HTML or Markdown formatting is better on web pages and in documents. Use this only where formatting is not supported.
