About this tool
The passphrase is built from the EFF long wordlist (7,776 common, easy-to-spell words, CC BY 3.0). This is the digital version of rolling five dice per word. Each word adds log₂(7776) ≈ 12.9 bits of entropy, so six words give about 77.5 bits, which takes centuries to brute-force even at a trillion guesses a second. Words are picked with crypto.getRandomValues(), so every word is equally likely.
Frequently asked questions
How many words should I use?
Five words (≈65 bits) is fine for most accounts. Use six or seven (78–90 bits) for a password manager master password or disk encryption.
Are dictionary words not insecure?
Not when they are chosen at random. Security comes from the huge number of combinations (7,776⁶ ≈ 2.2 × 10²³), not from strange characters.
What if a site requires numbers and capitals?
Turn on “Capitalize” and “Add a number”. The rule is met and the phrase stays easy to remember.
