About this tool
There are two systems. Decimal (SI) units go up in powers of 1,000 (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). Drive makers, network speeds and macOS use them. Binary (IEC) units go up in powers of 1,024 (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). Windows and RAM sizes use binary units, even though Windows labels them “GB”. That difference is why a 1 TB drive appears as about 931 GB in Windows. No space is missing.
Network speeds are measured in bits per second. Divide Mbps by 8 to get megabytes per second.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1 GB 1000 MB or 1024 MB?
In SI (decimal) units 1 GB = 1,000 MB. The binary unit, 1 GiB, is 1,024 MiB.
Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
The drive holds 10¹² bytes. Windows divides by 1,024³ and shows 931 “GB”, which is really GiB.
How long does a 1 GB download take at 100 Mbps?
100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s, so about 80 seconds at full speed.
